Hello friends,
As today’s Gandhi Jayanti so, I would like to show you what
have we got after 68 years of independence. Have we become really
“independent”? What really is
independence? Is it what we celebrate every 15th august or is it
what Hizbul mujaaheedin and ISIS says, that is, to make the world a singular
sect? I don’t know- I really don’t! But I know what M.K. Gandhi stands for when
he was fighting for the freedom and austerity of our country and countrymen.
What he stood for, as we all know, was tolerance, mutual respect and all the
more equality. How important is 2nd October for an Indian? I am
telling you with audacious honesty that for most of us it’s just a national
holiday, a day to rest for some and to roam around for others, but instead of
just looking this as a holiday I have tried to look at this as a day of
comparison, to do have a check at what ideally we should be and what have we
become?
I have seen various intellectuals as well as a common
Indians complaining at various forums about how foreigners look at Indians and
how they feel that we are docile and submissive and we fight the general
consensus that we are independent, on our own, and can fight any adversity that
may come. But have we made ourselves that strong or these are just a lie that
we tell to our self and everyone else?
I think we are inclined towards the latter as there are many
proofs that I can put forward, from the recent examples: The lynching of a
Muslim in Uttar Pradesh has shown the grave horror that a minority could feel,
how can you feel safe in an environment where a person is lynched just on the
skepticism, that he has beef in his refrigerator. Is this is the tolerance we
are advocating and brag about in the world? I must say that tolerance needed
some change in its definition in India, if this is what tolerance is.. there
are much many examples that I can put forward such as the lynching of a
rationalist in Kerala, lynching of an alleged rapist in Manipur and many more,
to say the least, I think something is seriously wrong with this approach,
something gravely faulty that needed to be rectified and that too soon.
I request you to think about this and put forward your
thoughts on this, responses are highly appreciated….
Thanks.
